À L'ombre des Vivants

David is a photographer deeply rooted in capturing the harsh and marginalized aspects of society: decline, prostitution, homelessness, addiction, and isolation. His work often leans toward abstraction, evoking a poetic vision rather than a straightforward journalistic narrative. He draws inspiration from renowned photographers like Michael Ackermann, Antoine d’Agata, and Mateusz Kowalik, whose works also explore similar themes. David’s approach avoids voyeurism and sensationalism, instead focusing on humanizing those who have been stripped of their humanity. This ethos is reflected in the title of his exhibition, “In the Shadow of the Living.”

David reflects on his unexpected journey into photography: “Nothing predestined me to become a photographer. Born in 1978 into a modest family, discretion and hard work were the cornerstones of my upbringing. I followed a conventional path without much deviation. Later, I began my professional life but felt unfulfilled. By chance, photography changed everything. Sensitive and curious, I stumbled upon an exhibition near my home in Toulouse featuring the work of Willy Ronis. For the first time in my life, I felt a profound sense of belonging. From that moment, I decided to wander the streets in search of life’s fleeting moments and unique emotions. I was lost but utterly happy. Eventually, I found myself drawn to the outskirts of the city, documenting the lives of those often ignored—people we don’t talk about. Since then, my work has focused on alternative ways of life, highlighting marginality through different environments. Through my photography, I strive to present a difficult and reclusive world from a human and poetic perspective.”

He recounts his personal journey: “I left my job as a Decathlon salesperson and spent nine years documenting the lives of marginalized individuals in Toulouse. My work unfolded in three phases—exploring the outskirts near the ring road, the city itself, and the forest—venturing into obscure and hard-to-reach places that offered me profound life experiences, transforming my relationship with others.” He shares a poignant quote from one of his subjects, Franck, who says, “I am sick, no longer able to face the world. I live in seclusion here, avoiding the gaze of others. People like me are frightening…”

At his exhibition opening, David presented his work with simplicity and palpable emotion, which resonated deeply with the audience. His photography is characterized by its generosity, subtlety, and absence of melodrama. Through a compassionate and humanist lens, he restores a sense of dignity to those who endure suffering, offering a profound and empathetic portrayal of their lives.
